Chapter 19

Mindy

When I’d read that snow was predicted, I’d expected maybe an inch, two at most. But there was nearly a foot on the ground, and it was still snowing. Moonlight reflected off the snow, blanketing the ranch in a strange glow.

But staring out the window made me feel cold, so I curled up on the sofa and sipped my hot tea. I read a romance I’d had in my TBR pile for months and checked weather updates between chapters.

The lights flickered, and I jumped up once they were back on. Candles would be handy if I were plunged into darkness longer than a few moments. All I had to do was remember where I’d stored my candles. I wandered through the house, checking closets and cabinets. I finally found them in the small cabinet above the stove. Why had I put them there? I’d probably been distracted by my neighbor’s swim time and hadn’t been thinking clearly.

I arranged the candles on the coffee table with the torch lighter beside them and went back to reading. Before finishing a paragraph, darkness engulfed me. This time, there was no flicker. I felt around the table for the lighter, then lit the three candles.

If the power were off all night, I’d need multiple blankets or I’d wake up with icicles on my toes.

Reading by candlelight left a lot to be desired. So, with Sir snuggled on my chest and three blankets draped over us, I closed my eyes.

After lying there a while, I must’ve fallen asleep because I jumped when someone—I had a fairly good guess who—banged on the door. It startled Sir, and his claws dug into me.

I yanked his mini deadly weapons off my shirt and hurried to the door with a candle in my hand. “Coming.” It was too cold to talk with the door open, so I motioned for Jeffrey to come inside.

“Come on. You can stay at my house until we have power again. I have a fireplace and a small generator. You’ll freeze if you stay here.” He glanced toward the living room. “And I’ll get Sir. I bet he hates this.”

If it weren’t so cold in my house, I’d have sent Jeffrey home alone. But it was extremely cold, and the dark somehow made it feel colder.

I nodded. “Let me throw a few things in a bag.”

“Thank goodness. I thought you’d argue with me.”

“I’m too cold to argue.”

“Well, that’s one good thing about this blasted storm.” He unzipped his coat. “Once I get the cat to my house, I’ll come back for your stuff.”

“What about all my food?”

“We’ll either move stuff to my fridge or store it outside.” He rubbed my shoulder and even through my multiple layers, I could feel the heat of his hand. “Wait inside until I get back.”

“Just come back in. I won’t be long.”

I walked toward the hall but peeked around the corner in time to see Jeffrey nestle Sir Lancelot inside the coat. Now I was jealous of my cat.
